Shrewsbury – The St. John’s Pioneers baseball team defeated their cross-town rival Shrewsbury Colonials 2-1 in a game that stretched to 9 innings. The game was played April 23 at Pioneer Field on the St. John’s campus.
St. John’s David Turco led off the bottom of the first inning with a double, and then later scored on an Ian Seymour single. Shrewsbury tied up the game in the top of the fourth, when Tim Rioux reach first base after a dropped third strike and then advanced to third on an error. Drew Campanale then singled to drive him home. The game remained tied until the bottom of the ninth, when St. John’s managed to load the bases without a hit, courtesy of 2 walks and a hit batsman. Turco raced home from third on a passed ball to end the game.
Ian Seymour pitched five innings for St. John’s, striking out 5 and earning the win. Sean Burke came on in relief, pitching 4 innings and striking out 6. Kevin Hummer pitched 8 innings for Shrewsbury, striking out 4.
St. John’s improved to 6-1 on the season, while Shrewsbury fell to 4-2.
