Local students Ashley Beauchamp and Abigail Mangsen's road to becoming business professionals includes an upcoming trip to Indianapolis thanks to awards from Marlborough-area business leaders. On April 16, the Marlborough Regional Chamber of Commerce presented its first $500 Cathy Gregory Mogavero Business Professionals of America (BPA) awards to Beauchamp, a Marlborough High School senior, and Mangsen, an Assabet Valley Regional Technical High School sophomore. The chamber's scholarship fund will sponsor the awards, through the Marlborough Regional Community Foundation's auspices.

Marlborough - The Week of the Young Child is an annual celebration sponsored by the National Association of the Education of Young Children (NAEYC). This year, Next Generation Children's Centers planned a weeklong celebration April 7 to 11 to help bring extra attention to what they do. "The purpose of the week is to bring public attention to the needs of the children and celebrate in a creative way to showcase that. We have 10 locations across Middlesex County. Each of us participated in exciting things throughout the week," said Jen Smith, director of Next Generation Children's Center in Marlborough.

Marlborough – It was a night of "Glitz and Glam at the Inn" as the city's residents came together April 5 at the Mayor's Charity Ball held at the Holiday Inn. The ball, which has been held each inaugural year since 1960, benefits the Mayor's Charity Relief Fund, which helps residents in need of financial assistance at times of crisis or hardship. Mayor Arthur Vigeant, noting that this is the only major source of revenue for the fund, added that the response of residents and businesses had been "overwhelming."

Marlborough chamber to celebrate 90th anniversary Gatsby style

Marlborough – Preparations are underway for what could be the area's most unique social event of nine decades: the Marlborough Regional Chamber of Commerce's (MRCC) 90th Anniversary Gatsby Gala to be celebrated Friday, May 2, 7 p.m. to midnight, at the Marlborough Country Club. Susanne Morreale Leeber joined the MRCC staff as membership director in 1987, and has served as president and CEO since 1991. She appreciates the chamber's rich and ongoing history as an advocate for the region's business community. "The chamber was originally the Board of Trade in 1924," she explained. "Back then, the mayor told people at a big meeting that he wanted more support for the business community, so the Board of Trade filed its paperwork as the Chamber of Commerce."

Open space and recreation plan approved by council

Marlborough - The 2011-2018 plan to preserve and develop Marlborough's open space and natural resources was approved by the City Council at its March 24 meeting. Prepared by Conservation Officer Priscilla Ryder and the Open Space and Recreation Committee, it provides for upgrading and building new parks to meet the city's recreation needs and acquiring parcels for passive recreation and new community projects.
