Council approves sewer ordinance change

Marlborough - Councilors approved an amendment to the city's sewer ordinance at the Sept. 9 meeting that will potentially save the city $12 to $26 million. The request made by Public Works Commissioner Ronald LaFreniere places limits on the amount of treated wastewater that is deposited into the Assabet River from the Easterly and Westerly treatment plants. The measure was presented to the full council by Ward 1 City Councilor Joseph Delano, chair of the Operations and Overview Committee. During committee deliberations on the proposal, LaFreniere explained that changing the language was necessary to qualify for a zero-percent financing rate on a portion of the State Revolving Fund loans used to pay for upgrades at the two facilities.

Council considers cultural district for Marlborough's downtown

Marlborough – At a recent meeting, the City Council agreed to consider a resolution on behalf of the Marlborough Downtown Village, to endorse the application for a Massachusetts Cultural Council District, a designation offered through the Massachusetts Cultural Council. The matter was considered at the recommendation of Ward 6 City Councilor Edward Clancy. The Marlborough Downtown Village committee has met over the past several months, with the assistance of the Marlborough Economic Development Corporation, to develop the application, which, if accepted, will help to promote Main Street and also make it easier to apply for grant funding when available.

Senior tax program to continue in city

Marlborough - Local seniors once again have an opportunity to participate in the Senior Citizen Residential Property Tax Work-off Program (SCRPT) as the second year of the program gets underway. Marlborough – The Marlborough Public Library will hold two workshops: “Plant Night!” Thursday, March 17, and “Seed Swap” Tuesday, March 22. Both events are in the Bigelow Auditorium at the library, 35 W. Main St., from 6-8 p.m. Refreshments will be served.
