Soccer club helps players reach their potential

Region – For many area kids, playing recreational sports such as soccer, baseball or hockey is an integral part of growing up. Although most towns still subsidize their school programs, more advanced players are usually on their own and for many, it is a luxury they cannot afford. Jason Braga, who grew up in Hudson, thinks all kids should have the chance to participate, no matter what their financial circumstances.

Over 1,000 support inaugural 5K in Hudson for UMass ALS Cellucci Fund

Hudson – Elected officials on both sides of the aisle united Aug. 2 at the Hudson-Concord Elks Lodge 959 to support the final campaign of Argeo Paul Cellucci, former Massachusetts governor and ambassador to Canada. They were among the runners and walkers who travelled a 5K route in his hometown for the inaugural Gov. Cellucci Tribute Road Race. After a diagnosis of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), Cellucci launched the UMass ALS Champion Fund in 2011. ALS took his life at age 65 in 2013 and his renamed campaign continues as the UMass ALS Cellucci Fund. Over 1,000 supporters registered for this fundraiser.

Westborough - Julio's Liquors has not always been the regional destination that it is today. Family-owned and operated since inception, the store was opened in 1974 by Ron Maloney and his brothers-in-law, Gene and Julio Colangelo. The current owner, Ryan Maloney - Ron's son - bought the business in 2000 and since that time has oversaw it's growth into not only one of the top liquor stores in the country, but also one that has earned international acclaim.

First responders and veterans honored at ‘LiveLife Family Day’

Shrewsbury – Despite the rain, nearly 1,000 people enjoyed a free barbecue and met with local first responders at the "LiveLife Family Day" July 27 at the Hebert Candy Mansion. The event was hosted by the Worcester-based organization Valiant Veterans LiveLife Center and Massachusetts Vest-A-Dog.

Westborough Garden Club spreads joy of gardening

Westborough - Flowers in bright shades color the town of Westborough everywhere from the children's fairy garden inside the library to the veterans" memorials, to outside of town buildings. Shrewsbury - Sam Quinn, 22, recently signed a contract with Radio City Music Hall to join the cast as a dancer with the Radio City Christmas Spectacular National Tour. The 2009 Shrewsbury High School (SHS) graduate is a 2012 magna cum laude graduate of the University of Arizona, earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in dance.

Shrewsbury National wins Northborough Invitational Baseball Tournament

Northborough – Shrewsbury National defeated West Boylston in the finals of the Northborough Invitational Baseball Tournament for 12-year-olds July 20, under the lights at Casey Field in Northborough. The final score was 9-1. Shrewsbury National scored first with a solo home run by Cade Nelson in the second inning, and never trailed in the game. Logan Peterson pitched a complete game for Shrewsbury National. West Boylston's lone run came on a home run by Adam Fuller in the fifth inning.

Chick-fil-A will soon be open in Westborough

Westborough – Local officials gathered July 15 to celebrate the newest addition to the area's dining options: Chick-fil-A, the fast food chain that specializes in chicken sandwiches. Construction has already started at the restaurant's 286 Turnpike Road (Route 9) location. It is slated to open this fall and employ 80 people. The new restaurant will be the Atlanta-based chain's third Massachusetts location and the second stand-alone in the state.

Southborough youth strive to save historic home from demolition

Southborough – A group of Southborough teens are learning an important lesson during summer break. They organized a grassroots effort to save the historic Burnett/Garfield stone mansion at 84 Main Street from possible demolition. The house was built in 1850 by Joseph Burnett, founder of several town landmarks including St. Mark's School and Deerfoot Farms. It was sold to the Garfield family in 1947. Recently, the building was slated to be purchased by Westborough-based developer Robert Moss for $1.5 million from Jon Delli Priscoli, who bought it in 2012.

Collings Foundation to hold seventh annual Race of the Century

Region - The Collings Foundation, a nonprofit educational foundation devoted to supporting living history events to encourage learning by participation, will host the seventh annual Race of the Century July 26 and 27. The event, which pits some of the greatest mobile technological advancements against each other, will take place at the organization's headquarters, 137 Barton Road in Stow. The entire facility will be open each day from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. with races starting at around 1 p.m.
