Local jazz students perform at Hatch Shell in Boston

Region – Jazz students from Marlborough High School (MHS) and Algonquin Regional High School (ARHS) added an impressive credit to their resumes when they performed May 4 at the Hatch Shell on the Boston Esplanade. The invitation was extended after an ensemble from each school earned a Gold Medal rating at both the district and state big band festivals presented by the Massachusetts Association for Jazz Education (MAJE). Joining them was the MHS Small Jazz Combo who received a Gold Medal rating at the MAJE state combo/choir festival.

Hudson High class of “49 reunites for 65th anniversary

Hudson – Members of the Hudson High School (HHS) class of 1949 gathered May 3 at Longfellow's Wayside Inn in Sudbury to celebrate their 65th reunion. They reunite at least every five years thanks to a committee chaired by Barbara (Lenox) Masciarelli, who was the senior class secretary. "I'se had a list of all the classmates ever since we started doing this," she said. "People contact myself or somebody else who's in Hudson with updates if they move."

Marlborough native raises stroke awareness with Tedy's Team

Marlborough – Marlborough native Katie Jerdee has much in common with former New England Patriots linebacker Tedy Bruschi. They'se both athletes who suffered a stroke at an early age and were treated at Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital. More recently, they both ran April 28 in the Boston Marathon with Tedy's Team to raise awareness and funds. "Being able to see someone like Tedy as an example has meant a lot in my recovery," Jerdee said. "I hope to be that way to other people who, unfortunately, go through a stroke."

Marlborough – Over 200 guests arrived stylishly dressed circa-1920s for the Marlborough Regional Chamber of Commerce's (MRCC) 90th Anniversary Gatsby Gala, celebrated May 2 at the Marlborough Country Club. Musical entertainment was provided by the Dom V Swing Out Big Band led by Domenic Valarioti of Marlborough, and the award-winning Marlborough High School Small Jazz Combo.

Teens design their new room at Marlborough library

Marlborough – After the Marlborough Public Library received $5,000 from Digital Federal Credit Union, it was decided that the donation would go toward transforming about half of a storage room on the bottom floor into a space for teen patrons. The challenge was to determine how to best utilize the approximate 16-square-foot area. Jess Bacon, teen services librarian, feels that the relatively small space will solve more problems than it could create. "Trying to fit everything we want to do in there will be tough, but we didn's have a spot for teens before," she said. "We had three computers upstairs next to reference, which is the quiet area. So the teens had to keep their voices down when they wanted to hang out and talk."

Westborough High showcases students” music and art at spring gala

Westborough - On Thursday, May 1, the Westborough Fine Arts Education Association (WFAEA) will present its annual Spring Fine Arts Gala Concert and Exhibition in the Westborough High School auditorium. The event features performances from all 24 of the school's performance ensembles, and showcases contributions from Westborough High's visual artists. "It's basically like looking at the department through a microscope lens," Fine Arts Coordinator David Jost said. "You get to see everything."

Local Studebaker fans hold spring kickoff

Northborough - The Studebakers Drivers Club Ocean Bay Chapter held its annual Spring Kickoff April 27 at the Northborough Historical Society. Paul Derosier, a member of the Studebaker's Club Ocean Bay Chapter, which encompasses Massachusetts and Rhode Island, and himself the owner of four Studebakers, organized the rally. Derosier is also the current President of the Northborough Historical Society.

Shrewsbury girl, 8, is already a veteran fundraiser

Shrewsbury - Birthdays. Everybody has one but it's how we choose to celebrate, or not, that differs from person to person. For 8-year-old Shrewsbury resident Kiira Maloney, her birthday is not at all about the presents. In fact, this year, she has decided to forego receiving presents for her March 5 birthday and instead has asked for donations to Project Bread's Walk for Hunger. The programs funded by Project Bread help to provide meals for those in need.

Westborough High holds fundraiser for African communities

Westborough – On Saturday, May 3,from 7 to 8:30 p.m., students and faculty from Westborough High School and members of the First United Methodist Church of Westborough invite the public to attend a fundraising event for Project Rwanda in the high school lobby. All money will go to support four initiatives in central African communities in Rwanda and the Congo. Donations will go toward paving a road to the Kibogora Hospital opening up better access to healthcare for thousands of Rwandans, teaching children at an orphanage, rebuilding the Centre Marembo School for the disadvantaged in the village of Kigali, and funding teachers, supplies and meals in the South Kivu region of the Congo.

Humble hero credits “right spot, right time”

Like so many others on Dec. 24, 2012, Ted Coghlin and his granddaughter Roselyn were out doing last-minute errands. But when they pulled into the parking lot of the Stop & Shop on Route 9 in Shrewsbury, things quickly went awry when Coghlin suffered a sudden medical emergency. But thanks to the quick actions of one man, Charlie Lemay, what could have ended in tragedy instead ended in the best gift Coghlin and his family could ever get – his life was saved.

Westborough – Colin Barr, a 9-year-old student at Armstrong Elementary School, was excited to go to the Boston Bruins versus Buffalo Sabres game in Boston April 12 with his father, John. His excitement, however, grew by leaps and bounds in the first period and not just because his favorite team was playing well after a mini-slump. Instead, it was because he found he was going to be taking home a coveted souvenir – a jersey of from one of the players that would be literally right off the player's back.

Mayor announces Marlborough's two Senior of the Year recipients

Marlborough – "The more things change, the more they stay the same" is a proverb that applies to the 38th annual Senior of the Year Dinner when Mayor Arthur Vigeant welcomed residents age 60 and over April 16 at the Marlborough High School cafeteria. New this year, there were two honorees: Lydia Whitcomb and Rita Connors. As in past years, the mayor noted that each deserves recognition for outstanding contributions to the city.
