Northborough - Danielle Fucci, a junior at Algonquin Regional High School in Northborough, has never smoked a cigarette, and she never will. Fucci made this promise to herself as she watched three loved ones succumb to lung cancer over the past few years. She lost another dear family friend to cancer just one week before this year's Great American Smokeout, motivating her to take ownership of that event at her school.

SELCO introduces proposed changes, challenges

Shrewsbury - Representatives from Shrewsbury Electric and Cable Operations (SELCO) met with the Board of Selectmen at the board's Dec. 18 meeting to present a summary of current and proposed operations necessary for the utility's re-licensing in 2013. SELCO General Manager Michael Hale presented an overview of company operations. He indicated that SELCO is in good shape to keep serving the town, with the financing of current operations under control. Future operations will depend upon increased revenue.

Westborough to test smart phone app

Westborough – Westborough will soon be one of 36 Massachusetts communities who will be testing a new smart phone app designed to help implement or improve municipal services. Town Manager Jim Malloy told the Board of Selectmen at its Dec. 17 meeting that Westborough and 34 other communities will be "piggy-backing" onto a grant that the city of Boston won from the state's Community Innovation Challenge program.
