Northborough – Mrs. Theresa R. (Sofka) Nonnemaker, of St. James City, Florida, died Sunday, July 29, 2012 in her daughter’s home after an illness. She was 81. Westborough – Twelve Westborough students recently successfully completed an American Red Cross Babysitting class sponsored by the Westborough Youth & Family Services (WFYS).
Red Cross certified instructor and WYFS counselor, Betheda Shuman, ran the nine-hour program during the week of July 16. Babysitter trainees learned about a variety of topics including how to care for infants and children, be good role models, interview for jobs, solve problems and handle emergencies. After completing the course, participants were invited to display their contact information on a bulletin board outside Room 21, second floor of the Forbes Municipal Building, 45 West Main Street, for anyone interested in hiring a certified babysitter.
Shrewsbury – Catherine Zhang of Shrewsbury, a student at Shrewsbury High School, recently received a silver medal in SUNY Oswego’s second annual GENIUS Olympiad, a global high school science, art, creative writing and design competition focused on the environment.
Hudson – Please join volunteers at Hudson’s new community garden from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Aug. 11, for our big Volunteer Maintenance Day. The Garden, which serves two dozen gardening families and more through vegetable donations to the Hudson Food Pantry, relies on volunteers to keep the site clean, orderly, and inspiring. The relentless weeds always threaten to retake the Garden space and each month we need to cut them back.

Adam Bakr, who had been on administrative leave from December 12, 2011 until terminated by Superintendent Anthony Pope on April 11, 2012, has been reinstated as an Assistant Principal at Marlborough High School effective August 1.
“I used to watch my mom playing tennis, so I picked up a racquet and ended up falling in love with the sport. I started playing when I was 8, and went right into USTA competition by the age of 10. That’s also the age I first qualified for the National Tournament.”
