Heartfelt thanks from a nurse on the frontline

To my unsung heroes:

I am a nurse. I’ve been a nurse for 25 years and have never been challenged in my career by anything as I have with COVID-19.

This letter is not about me, or nurses, or hospitals. This letter is about YOU.

We are all inundated with COVID-19 news. There is not much else I can tell you about this virus or our working conditions.

But what I can tell you is how YOUR generosity as a community has been so uplifting for all of us during this time. We are so indebted to your goodwill and kindness. You have restored our faith in humanity. We will never forget those that have, unsolicited, contributed homemade surgical caps, food that has been dropped off on my doorstep for my family, baby monitors, food to hospital staff members, cases of Girl Scout cookies, flowers, lotions and soap. The donations are endless.  I see and appreciate the banners and colorful signs of support and appreciation, and the many numerous well-wishing texts and emails to me.

You are not broadcasting names nor asking for attention.  Quietly, you gave of yourselves and reached out to others to do the same.  YOU are the real heroes during this pandemic.

I’m just doing my job.
May your generosity of heart be returned ten-fold!
With all the gratitude in the world,
From me and all of the nurses that have been the recipient of your kindness,

Jody Vaughan RN MS
Boston Medical Center emergency room staff nurse
Westborough resident
