John R. McGinnShrewsbury – John R. “Jack” McGinn, 78, a longtime Shrewsbury resident, passed away unexpectedly at his home on February 7, 2023. Born in Worcester to Thomas J. and Catherine (Murphy) McGinn, Jack attended Worcester Public Schools.

After graduating from North High, he went on to receive his Bachelor and Master’s degrees from Worcester State College. He also did graduate work at Anna Maria College in Paxton. Jack went on to work as a guidance counselor at Shrewsbury High School for thirty years and was also an Adjunct Professor for several years in the Counselor Education Program at Worcester State College. Jack proudly served in the Army Reserve during the Vietnam War.

Jack enjoyed helping others, volunteering at the Mustard Seed and serving on the Board of Shrewsbury Youth and Family Services. An avid tennis player, Jack coached boys tennis at Shrewsbury High School for eleven years and guided the girls team for seventeen years – twice taking the girls team to the State finals. He also hosted an informative talk program on local cable services, and tended bar at several local restaurants.

Jack is survived by nieces and nephews, including Katie Centola of North Attleboro, Susan McGinn-Fullen of Shrewsbury, Patrick McGinn of Westford, and Thomas “Chip” McGinn of Wrentham.

Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend a visitation period at the Chiampa Funeral Home, 5 Church Road, On the Common, Shrewsbury Center, on Tuesday, February 21, 2023, from 4:00 – 7:00 pm.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Jack’s honor to the Joe Andruzzi Foundation, to assist New England cancer patients and their families with much needed financial support.
