John L. Current Sr.Shrewsbury – John Lee Current, Sr., affectionately known as “Rebel,” died peacefully on Monday morning, November 13, 2023 at Beaumont Rehab & Nursing in Northborough.

He leaves his wife of 57 years, Patricia “Patty” (King) Current; their 3 loving sons, John L. Current Jr. and his wife Caroline, of Shrewsbury, Matthew T. Current of Yarmouthport, and Daniel C. Current and his wife Heather, of Shrewsbury; adoring granddaughters, Chloe, Lylah, Hannah and Macey, all of Shrewsbury; his sister, Kay Current McMillan and her husband Jim, of Statesville, NC, and many nieces and nephews. He also leaves many close friends, especially Debbie and Moe Tardy. Lee was predeceased by his sisters, Sheila Current, Susan Current Milam and her husband Jack, and brother-in-law, Olen F. King, of Danbury, North Carolina.

Lee was raised in Harmony, North Carolina, son of the late Billie Luin and Lovie Mae (Williams) Current. He proudly served in the U.S Air Force for several years. While Lee was in the Air Force, he became close friends with Olen King, who introduced Lee to his sister, Patty. The two were soon married in 1966, and settled in Shrewsbury to begin their life together.

Lee worked as a Truck Driver for many years for Yellow Freight and was a proud Teamster.

In his free time, Lee could be found driving his John Deere tractor to the garage, where he would work on small projects or just talk shop. He and his family spent many summers at Shelburne Falls, enjoying camping, fishing, and the beautiful river. True to his southern roots, Lee loved NASCAR, Waylon Jennings, and affectionately called all of the females in his life “darlin’.” Lee was lovingly known by his four “grandbabies” as “Papa.” These grandbabies were his pride and joy. He treasured their artwork and trinkets, creating scrapbooks to document their lives. He will be remembered always for his kindness to everyone he met. His memory will live on in the hearts of his family and friends.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Veteran’s Inc., 69 Grove Street, Worcester, MA 01605.

Relatives and friends are invited to visit with the Current family from 10:30 AM – 12 PM on Friday, December 1, 2023 at the BRITTON-SHREWSBURY FUNERAL HOME, 648 Main Street, Shrewsbury. A graveside service will follow at 12:30 PM in Section QQ of Mountain View Cemetery, 22 Boylston Street, Shrewsbury.
