Westborough - Maria Bolf had never experienced homelessness. She said she worked all of her life, up until she underwent surgery and was unable to keep her job. Money got tight, and before long she said her family found itself choosing between paying bills and buying food. For the last two weeks, Bolf, her husband, and three of her children have been living in a hotel room in Shrewsbury, which is a long way from their former home in Fall River. They were placed there by the Massachusetts Department of Transitional Assistance.

Hudson Elks officer helps fellow military veterans

Hudson – According to the Elks website, “So long as there are veterans, the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks will never forget them.” Accomplishing that mission at the Hudson-Concord Elks Lodge 959 is overseen by Jesse Harvey. He was installed as leading knight, the second in command, for the 2017-2018 fraternal year during a ceremony March 17.

Motorcycle ride keeps memory of Hudson boy alive

Hudson – Memories of a Hudson boy are kept alive as his family prepares for the seventh annual Ride for Sherry’s House and Why Me. This year's motorcycle ride is scheduled for Sunday, July 10, beginning and ending at the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie #643, 271 Cox St. in Hudson. There, others can join motorcyclists afterward for a barbecue to support a good cause.

Historical copy of Declaration of Independence on display in Southborough

Southborough - Visitors to the Southborough Library have the unique opportunity to view a piece of town history - the original copy of the Declaration of Independence that was sent to Rev. Nathan Stone (minister at the Meeting House in Southborough, which was located on the site of the current Pilgrim Church) to read to his parishioners in July of 1776. According to Bob Elliott, a member of the Southborough Historical Society and a re-enactor, this copy of the Declaration of Independence is monumental. The head of each congregation was sent a copy with this order (as stated on the bottom of the document): "That the Declaration of Independence be printed; and a copy sent to the Ministers of each Parish, of every Denomination with in this State; and that they severally be required to read the same to their respective congregations, as soon as divine service is ended, in the afternoon, on the first Lord's Day after they have received it."

Marlborough – Nearly 300 motorcyclists and passengers endured sudden downpours Aug. 6 as they started the seventh annual Shawna Jean Larassa (SJL) Memorial Motorcycle Ride. Cornerstone Academy kids show caring by sharing this season

Northborough - The students and families of Cornerstone Academy, a private school in Northborough, are reaching out to a family in need this holiday season. The school is working with Northborough Helping Hands to collect toys, games and gift cards for a local family in need. Shrewsbury Fire Department helps kids living in hotel learn about fire safety

Shrewsbury - The Shrewsbury Fire Department recently presented its Student Awareness and Fire Education, or S.A.F.E., program to displaced families that are now residing at the Days Inn. The program gave Captain Sean T. Lawlor and other fire department personnel a chance to speak with the tenants about fire safety in the confines of the hotel. Lawlor began the program for the adults by talking about emergency exit plans. He encouraged them to make sure they know what to do if a fire were to occur and suggested that they practice an exit plan with their children in a calm manner so they will know how to react.
