City awarded grant for Memorial Beach

Marlborough - The city of Marlborough has been awarded a $400,000 grant from the state to make improvements to Memorial Beach. Richard Sullivan, the secretary of the Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs made the announcement at a press conference held at City Hall Thursday, Dec. 6. The funding is part of the Parkland Acquisitions and Renovations for Communities (PARC) Program.

“Hope for the Holidays” returns in Marlborough

Marlborough – For the second year, the United Way of Tri-County is offering its "Hope for the Holidays" program in Marlborough to help brighten the season for families in need of assistance. Previously, the city's Human Services Department organized a similar program for many years known as "Holiday Helpers." Barbara LaGrenade, the director of volunteerism at the United Way of Tri-County and the office coordinator at the Marlborough Community Cupboard, said the transition of the holiday programs has gone smoothly.

Funds for new Marlborough Senior Center design approved

Marlborough – The City Council unanimously approved at its Dec. 3 meeting $500,000 to fund costs associated with design and engineering plans for a new Senior Center to be built in a section of Ward Park, off Granger Boulevard. Ward 3 City Councilor Matt Elder, who had previously requested a neighborhood meeting in the area to allow his constituents to express any concerns prior to moving forward with the project, said he would not hold up approval of the funding. He added that he is planning to still hold the meeting next week with Mayor Arthur Vigeant in attendance.

Marlborough power outages to be studied

Marlborough ?Sporadic power outages in several parts of the city prompted the City Council at its Dec. 5 meeting to ask for a study into the matter. Ward 1 Councilor Joseph Delano, the chair of the council's Operations and Oversight committee, suggested the council bring together representatives from National Grid, as well as state and local officials, to discuss the outages.

“Festival of Trees” continues growing in fifth year

Marlborough – An idea introduced in 2008 added 17 decorated trees to the Marlborough Historical Society's annual "Christmas at the Farm" at their quaint headquarters, the Peter Rice Homestead. That simple idea has grown to become this year's fifth annual "Metrowest Festival of Trees," now featuring over 100 trees and wreaths displayed along with other attractions at the 47,500-square-foot Best Western Royal Plaza Trade Center. Festivities are scheduled for Friday, Dec. 7, 5 to 9 p.m.; Saturday, Dec. 8, 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.; and Sunday, Dec. 9, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Marlborough council approves Quest Diagnostics tax-financing deal

Marlborough - The City Council unanimously approved a 15-year tax financing package for Quest Diagnostics at its Nov. 26 meeting. Quest is seeking to lease 200,000 square feet of space at 200 Forest St., a location known over the years for housing RCA, Digital Equipment Corporation, Compaq and Hewlett Packard.

Former Marlborough resident displays artwork

Marlborough - Michele Renee Ledoux, a former resident of Marlborough, was one of the 175 award-winning artists who displayed fine and functional art at the Paradise City Arts Festival held in mid-November at the Royal Plaza Trade Center. The sign at her booth, resplendent with her artwork, read "Michele Renee Ledoux Fine Art," the name of her studio in Evergreen, Colo. Her work has a constant theme – the intention to invoke spirit and inspire alchemy – the transformation of the mundane into magic. It has been exhibited in solo and group shows both nationally and internationally, is in private collections, and also has been published in an award-winning book.

Marlborough council considers site for new Senior Center

Marlborough – Finding a new site to replace the current Senior Center, located at 250 Main St., has been one of Mayor Arthur Vigeant's goals since taking office in January. That goal is a bit closer, now that the City Council enthusiastically endorsed Vigeant's proposal for a new facility that would be located in a section of Ward Park at its Nov. 26 meeting. The matter will next be reviewed by the Operations and Oversight Committee, and the mayor's request for $500,000 to fund costs associated with design and engineering plans will be reviewed by the Finance Committee.
