Progress made in Shrewsbury dog enforcement order
Shrewsbury - The status of the order issued by the Shrewsbury Board of Selectmen in June regarding complaints of unruly dogs in the Westmont Road neighborhood was reviewed at its regularly scheduled meeting Aug. 27.
On June 11, Shrewsbury Animal Control Officer Leona M. Pease had brought before the selectmen the case of complaints from neighbors of Rolland Demers, of 31 Westmont Road, about unleashed dogs "Saydee" and "Pesky" roaming the neighborhood and allegedly causing problems for other property owners.
New middle school to be completed under budget
Shrewsbury – The new Sherwood Middle School is anticipated to be completed under budget and "fully wired for smart technology," according to the Board of Selectmen.
Several of the selectmen, including Chair Maurice DePalo, Henry Fitzgerald and Moira Miller, held an informal "round table" discussion Sept. 6 at the site of the new school. The purpose was to introduce the town to the new middle school, which will house approximately 900 fifth- and sixth-grade students beginning next year.

Shrewsbury resident gives back by helping newcomers learn English
Shrewsbury - Antonio Marin didn's speak English when he moved to the United States in 1992. Upon completing a master's degree in Venezuela, he was recruited for a job in Framingham at a Latino counseling center. Morin made time outside of work to study English with a volunteer tutor from Literacy Unlimited (LU) in Framingham. Now fluent and working as a special education teacher, the Shrewsbury resident returned to LU in September as a volunteer to help newcomers enroll during registration week.
"It was a privilege, really," Morin said about going back to the spot where he first got help to now help others. "When you'se in a new country and you don's know the language," he added, "everything is so difficult."
Latest Shrewsbury school budget proposal closes gap a bit
Shrewsbury School Superintendent Dr. Joseph Sawyer presented a revised district budget for fiscal year (FY) 2012 at the March 9 School Committee meeting. Although the proposal is a 2.98 percent increase over last year, the $48.5 million proposal is still $2.1 million more than the $46.3 million recommendation put forth by Town Manager Daniel Morgado.
