Shrewsbury – It’s been another busy year for Nick Silverio since graduating from Shrewsbury High School (SHS) in 2013. After studying business as a freshman in 2013-2014 at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania while performing with its Arts House Dance Company, he decided to take a gap year. That plan has been extended as Silverio completes a five-city tour of “Elf the Musical,” including performances from Tuesday, Nov 17, through Sunday, Dec 6, at the Wang Theatre of the Citi Performing Arts Center in Boston.

Hudson – Residents and visitors sported autumn layers on a brisk Oct. 17 when Hudson Recreation presented the 18th annual Pumpkin Fest at Morgan Bowl. Five hours of family fun featured lots of refreshments and activities offered by over 30 nonprofit organizations, live entertainment, sculpted balloons by clowns, pony rides, inflatable amusements, trackless train rides and fireworks.

Southborough celebrates its 42nd Heritage Day

Southborough – The center of Southborough was bustling with activities on an unseasonably warm Oct. 13 for its 42nd Heritage Day Celebration, organized by Southborough Recreation. Festivities began the previous evening when the Southborough Rotary Club presented the 17th annual Light-Up Southborough. Over 250 carved and decorated jack-o-lanterns were still on display along Common Street for visitors to view before the parade.

Observing Fire Prevention Week in Marlborough

Marlborough – The Marlborough Central Fire Station hosted a fun and educational open house Oct. 10 in observance of National Fire Prevention Week (Oct. 4 to 10). While adults collected fire safety literature, children watched videos and live demonstrations, played in an obstacle course and got behind the wheel of the department’s emergency vehicles. They and their families were treated to pizza, ice cream and popcorn.

Walk proceeds go to the Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) Center for Breast Cancer in Boston and the Virginia Thurston Healing Garden in Harvard.

Grant provides funds for senior fire safety in Southborough

Southborough - According to the National Fire Protection Association, people age 65 and over are twice as likely to be killed or injured by fires compared to the population at large. But thanks to a grant from the state’s Senior SAFE program, residents at the Colonial Gardens complex now have a stovetop device installed in their kitchens that will help in case a fire breaks out on their stoves.

Fashionable additions planned for remembrance fundraiser

Hudson – Fun, fashionable additions are planned for the fourth annual Miles and Smiles for Michaella, a 3.2-mile memorial walk scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 24, beginning and ending at Morgan Bowl in Hudson. Proceeds go to the Michaella Walsh Libby Scholarship Fund, which is awarded to students who share her interest in community service or will major in a health-related field. Donations are also contributed to Kids Power and Students Helping Honduras (SHH).

Lobel entertains chamber breakfast with insights into New England sports scene

Westborough – Bob Lobel, one of New England’s most iconic sportscasters, was the guest speaker at the Sept. 24 breakfast meeting of the Corridor Nine Area Chamber of Commerce held at the Doubletree Hotel. Over the course of an hour, Lobel regaled the audience with his humorous and insightful opinions on the state of the region’s four major sports teams. As a sports director and anchor for WBZ-TV in Boston, Lobel had interviewed and covered virtually every major team and sporting event in the region. He has also had successful radio shows and now has a new television show, “Legends with Bob Lobel.”
