Sylvia I. Scalley, 93Marlborough – Sylvia I. (DiBuono) Scalley, 93, died early Sunday morning, Sept. 11, 2011 after a long illness. She was the wife of the late William J. Scalley, who died in 1996.

Born in Marlborough, the daughter of the late Vitale and Angelina (Funicelli) DiBuono, she lived many years on Cape Cod and in Florida before moving back to this area. She was a United States Army veteran, serving 13 years, and was a member of the Army Nurses Core in the Korean War. She retired with the rank of captain.

After receiving her nursing degree, Mrs. Scalley worked as a nurse anesthetist for many years and retired from Mass. Eye and Ear Institute in 1980 after working there for 20 years.

She was a former member of the church of the Holy Redeemer in Florida and was a member of Saint Mary's church in Shrewsbury. She was a longtime member of the Third Order of Saint Francis.

Mrs. Scalley was a fiercely independent woman who believed strongly in education and continued to pursue degrees in different field, including receiving her MBA.

She is survived by many nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, and cousins.

Her funeral will be held Thursday, Sept. 15, at 10 a.m., in Saint Mary's Church, 16 Summer St., Shrewsbury. Burial will be at a later date. Arrangements under the direction of the William R. Short and Son Funeral Home of Marlborough.
