High school scoreboard: Teams wrap up end-of-season tournaments, eye state tournament brackets

REGION – Students had the last week of school off due to February break, but regional high school sports teams stayed active.

They wraped up a number of end-of-season tournaments before pivoting to the MIAA state tournament brackets, which have games scheduled beginning this week.

Grafton secured a CMADA Class B Championship with a win over Worcester, capping a dramatic week that saw the co-op Grafton/Blackstone Valley Technical High School squad outscore opponents 15-2 across three games. 

The Gators extended their larger win streak to six games with this strong week, capping the month of February with an 7-1-1 record and transitioning into the MIAA state tournament on a high note.

HUDSON

BOYS’ HOCKEY – FEB. 20

BOYS’ BASKETBALL – FEB. 21

Hudson – 65, Grafton – 57

Hudson started strong against Grafton last week in the quarterfinals of the Central Massachusetts tournament, taking a 20-point lead at one point in the first half. The Gators narrowed the deficit to just three points by halftime.

Hudson then held on though, securing a win against a Grafton squad that had beat them twice prior this winter. 

Leading the way in this effort was Hudson’s Jackson O’Brien, who scored 19 points for the Hawks.

Brady Stuart followed behind him with 13 points.

Jeremey LaCroix’s hat-trick goal late in the third period sent this game to overtime. Nashoba emerged victorious, though, with the sudden death game-winning goal. 

This marked Marlborough’s first loss to date in an otherwise undefeated season.

Shrewsbury girls’ hockey beat Norwell to claim their first of two tournament championships in as many days with a win in the Newburyport Bank Classic. 

Kaci Ryder was presented with tournament MVP recognition after the game. 

She scored in this defeat of Norwell, finding the back of the net alongside Katie Vona, Kate Louder, Blaire Fay and Holly Catarius.

Shrewsbury – 2, Boston Latin – 0

The co-op Shrewsbury girls hockey team won the COVID-19-delayed Giordano Christmas Classic with their 2-0 defeat of Boston Latin.

Aislinn Bennett and Kaci Ryder scored for the Colonials as goalie Risa Montoya secured MVP honors with her shutout performance.
