“Pass the Torch” helps stock food pantryWestborough – “Pass the Torch” is a program created by “In Your Shoes,” a giving circle, to keep the Westborough Food Pantry stocked during the summer months. The program is meant to be a simple and fun way to stay connected with friends and neighbors while providing for Westborough families in need. Torches (paper cutouts with instructions included) will be available to interested residents through In Your Shoes. Those wishing to participate in the program will receive a torch and make a donation to the Food Pantry by dropping their donation into a clearly marked bin at the Public Library.

Once a donation is made, donors add their name to the back of the torch and pass the torch to a neighbor or friend. Then the next person makes a donation, adds his/her name and passes the torch to a neighbor or friend.

It is just that simple: the torches are passed and donations are dropped at the library. Volunteers from In Your Shoes will pick up donations from the library and deliver them to the Food Pantry, where shelves will be re-stocked. The “Pass the Torch” program will continue through the summer, and torches can be returned to the library in mid-August.

Summer is a particularly difficult time for those in need. Hunger does not take the summer off, but food drives and donations to the Food Pantry slow down significantly when residents go on vacation and school is not in session. According to the Westborough Food Pantry, five new families signed up for services over the past week. “Passing the Torch” will help the Food Pantry assist the many Westborough residents who rely on its services.

Items presently needed by the Food Pantry include: juice – bottles or individual boxes/pouches; crackers/cookies; sandwich crackers (peanut butter/cheese, etc.); Raman noodles; drink mixes; and toiletries (soap, toothpaste, deodorant, shampoo).
