Work continues on Town Hall

Westborough – Crews work on the clock tower of the Westborough Town Hall May 13. Voters at the March 16, 2013 Annual Town Meeting approved a $7.3 million renovation project for the building, which was built in 1929 and is located in the heart of the downtown area.

Reliant Medical Group to open new walk-in facility in Hudson

Hudson – Reliant Medical Group offered a preview of its newest ReadyMED urgent care facility in Hudson with a ribbon-cutting and tours May 11 before its official opening Tuesday, May 19. Located at 234 Washington St., the 6,500-square-foot site is easily accessible, noted Raj Hazarika, M.D., chair of same day services.

Moms turn grief into recovery through local support group

Marlborough – A pair of mothers who lost their sons to drug overdose are using their tragedy to help others. Kathy Leonard lost her 27-year-old son Jonathan Testa in December and Cheryl Juaire lost her son Corey Merrill, 23, in 2011 – both to heroin overdose.

Groundbreaking held for Grafton’s Town House renovations

Grafton – Under brilliant blue skies, town officials and residents gathered at the back of Grafton Town House located at 1 Grafton Common May 2 to celebrate the groundbreaking of the historic landmark’s Phase II Accessibility Project. The project, which is a venture between the town and the building’s lead tenant, the nonprofit group Apple Tree Arts will bring the building into compliance with Massachusetts Architectural Access Board standards as well as meet current fire safety standards.

Grafton community leaders share story time with students

Grafton – Twenty-five special guests were welcomed April 27 by second- to sixth-graders at North Street Elementary School (NSES) for the sixth annual Community Reading Day, organized by the North Grafton Elementary Schools Parent Teacher Group. Most books were selected because they relate to the students’ curriculum or the readers’ professions; others were chosen and brought by the guests.

Friends set up fundraiser to help man stricken with Lewy Body Dementia

Northborough – Nearly 40 years ago, Donna and Dan McDonald, who were high school sweethearts at Algonquin Regional High School, were married. Together they raised two sons, Jason and Tom, who now each have two children of their own. In 2001 Donna was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis which thankfully is in remission for the time being. But that is the not the couple’s main health concern. For in 2012 when he was only 54, Dan, a former truck driver and manager, was diagnosed with Lewy Body Dementia (LBD), a disease that is similar to early onset Alzheimer’s Disease.

Junior Girl Scouts raise money for Haitian orphans

Shrewsbury – Members of Girl Scout Troop 11023 recently donated $200 and 132 boxes of Girl Scout cookies to an orphanage in Haiti. The girls had decided to use part of the money they raised in their recent cookie sale to help others. On hand to receive the check and cases of cookies was Cherylann Gengel of Holden, a founder of the Be Like Brit Foundation.

HCH and SMS alumni archive final visits to alma maters

Hudson – Years after the closings of Hudson Catholic High (HCH) in 2009 and St. Michael School (SMS) in 2011, alumni are still displaying their spirit on those buildings’ properties – and on Facebook. Hundreds of photos including selfies, class group shots and informal family portraits are getting posted online before the buildings’ imminent demolition.

Northboro Junior Woman’s Club plants pinwheels for child abuse awareness

Northborough - The Northboro Junior Woman’s Club (NJWC) has planted over 500 pinwheels at Town Hall in recognition of April’s designation as National Child Abuse Prevention Month. The effort is also in support of the “Pinwheels for Prevention” campaign created by Prevent Child Abuse America.

Northborough resident retires from Marine Corps Reserves after 21 years

Northborough – Enduring a long-distance relationship, being deployed overseas when you are just starting a family, facing dangerous situations and not knowing what the future holds for you when you return - these are just a few of the many sacrifices made by our servicemen. Northborough resident Kevin P. Conway and his family have lived with these sacrifices for over two decades. On April 1, Conway retired after 21 years of serving his country as a United States Marine non-commissioned officer.

Students awarded Marlborough chamber scholarships

Marlborough – Two local students are this year’s recipients of the Marlborough Regional Chamber of Commerce’s 2015 Cathy Gregory Mogavero Business Professionals of America Award. Checks for $500 were presented to the two students, Katelyn Godere, a senior from Marlborough High School (MHS) and Andre Colleoni-Pimenta, a senior from Assabet Valley Regional Technical High School (AVRTHS), in a ceremony held at the MRCC’s headquarters April 15.
