Westborough High sends record number of skiers to state competition

Westborough – It’s typical for a high school race team to have several skiers qualify for the state competition every year. This year, however, Westborough High School sent 11 racers – five boys and six girls – out of the total 36 racers for the entire Central Mass. High School Ski League.

Marlborough High cheerleaders on the road to national title

Marlborough - The Marlborough High School (MHS) Varsity Cheerleading Team had had an amazing fall season. Now, they are training hard for the upcoming Cheerleaders of America (COA) Ultimate International Championship in Orlando, Fla., April 3-4, with the hopes of bringing home the title. Seventeen girls will be competing at the event, which features teams from 15 states and 10 countries. The team is currently fundraising to help defer the costs, which include airfare, hotel and transportation.

Grafton/BVT hockey falls to Worcester in playoffs

Worcester – The seventh-seed Grafton/BVT Indians boys ice hockey team fell to the second-seed Worcester Wildcats by a score of 5-1 in the quarter final round of Central Division 3A playoffs. The game was played Feb. 28 at Buffone Skating Arena in Worcester.

Shrewsbury – Shamika Kanitkar, a third-grader at Floral Street Elementary School, got what she wanted for her 9th birthday: books donated to the Shrewsbury Public Library. The celebration started on her birthday, Jan. 20, and continued through school winter break when all of the 34 books were delivered.

Evening of Giving raises $32,500 for Marlborough shelter

Marlborough - Friends of Roland’s House, a group that supports the Marlborough-Hudson emergency homeless shelter, recently announced that $32,500 was raised at the 25th Evening of Giving held Dec. 4 at the Best Western Royal Plaza Hotel. Roland's House, located on Mechanics Street, is a temporary shelter serving up to 18 men and women. Its operations are supervised by the South Middlesex Opportunity Council's (SMOC) continuum of housing and services through the Common Ground Resource Center.

Westborough – On Feb. 20, a cold, blustery Friday morning, several people out and about in downtown Westborough got a warm and unexpected surprise, courtesy of Central One Federal Credit Union. That morning, the bank’s Westborough branch manager, David Kaiser and assistant branch manager, Rajani Kodun, visited several local establishments and paid for such things as breakfast, haircuts and groceries.

Westborough man hopes to find match at bone marrow drive

Region – The South Asian Marrow Association of Recruiters (SAMAR) will be holding a bone marrow drive at the India Center, 152 Main St., Shrewsbury, Sunday, March 1, from 1-4 p.m. The drive is being held to seek a donor for Vinoo, a Westborough resident, who is in urgent need of a bone marrow transplant. Although he specifically requires a donor of South Asian descent, all others are welcome and encouraged to attend the event.

Local organization helps foster kids ‘rise above’

While many of the basic primary needs of these children are met by the foster families, there is often not enough financial resources left to provide for some of the extra activities that are part of so many children’s lives and that help them grow into healthy adults.
