St. Mary's Parish holds first Day of Service

Shrewsbury – The Stewardship Ministry at St. Mary's Parish held the first Day of Service April 20 to allow parishioners to "live out their faith as stewards of God's many blessings," according to the day's organizers. Approximately 300 volunteers worked on service projects for three to four hours at locations in Shrewsbury and Worcester.

‘Evening of Giving’ raises $32,000 for Marlborough shelter

Marlborough - Friends of Roland's House, men and women committed to preventing homeless people from living on the street, gathered at the restaurant Chez Siam recently to hear about the success of the 23rd Evening of Giving. Westborough - Like many teens, Michelle Tilton, 17, has a full plate. She attends Westborough High School as a senior and played soccer until she suffered an ankle injury. She also holds down a job at Uhlman's Ice Cream stand. Unlike most teens, Tilton has lived most of her life with the knowledge that her mother, Carol, is fighting a brain tumor. "You can't really understand the situation unless you'se been in it," Michelle said.

Shrewsbury – Colin Bernard said he began riding dirt bikes when he was about 5 years old. "It's a deal my dad made with me and my brothers," he said. "As soon as we took the training wheels off our bikes, we could learn to ride dirt bikes."

Southborough – For Sue Loverso, 48, a 2008 trip to the Trapeze School New York (TSNY) with Girl Scout Troop 72766 sparked an addiction to aerial acrobatics. "I participated with the girls and was completely hooked by the time I left class," said Loverso. "I went back a month later and it has been a part of my life ever since."

Promoting early cancer detection among young peers

Northborough/Southborough – The 15-40 Connection is a nonprofit organization, based in Westborough, with the mission to raise awareness that the cancer survival rate of teens and young adults hasn's improved for over 35 years. One of the ways the group is promoting the importance of early detection is by helping to form clubs in high schools and colleges. Last school year, Algonquin Regional High School (ARHS) in Northborough started a club prompted by a concerned student, Stephanie Madigan, who is now a senior.

Marlborough - In collaboration with the city of Marlborough, the Colonial Garden Club of Marlborough has adopted many areas throughout the city to maintain. Among them are the signs at the Southborough, Hudson, Northborough and Sudbury town lines. There are two signs at each location, one mayor sign and one entrance sign.

Friends set up fundraiser to help man stricken with Lewy Body Dementia

Northborough – Nearly 40 years ago, Donna and Dan McDonald, who were high school sweethearts at Algonquin Regional High School, were married. Together they raised two sons, Jason and Tom, who now each have two children of their own. In 2001 Donna was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis which thankfully is in remission for the time being. But that is the not the couple’s main health concern. For in 2012 when he was only 54, Dan, a former truck driver and manager, was diagnosed with Lewy Body Dementia (LBD), a disease that is similar to early onset Alzheimer’s Disease.

Groundbreaking held for Grafton’s Town House renovations

Grafton – Under brilliant blue skies, town officials and residents gathered at the back of Grafton Town House located at 1 Grafton Common May 2 to celebrate the groundbreaking of the historic landmark’s Phase II Accessibility Project. The project, which is a venture between the town and the building’s lead tenant, the nonprofit group Apple Tree Arts will bring the building into compliance with Massachusetts Architectural Access Board standards as well as meet current fire safety standards.
