1
Shrewsbury - Annette Rafferty, born in 1930, began her work with Abby's House in 1973, before it even existed. After teaching for 21 years at various Catholic schools, she was asked by the Worcester Urban Ministry Commission to serve on a committee assessing whether there was need for a new homeless shelter in Worcester. Heading the task force, Rafferty took to the streets. It didn't take long to conclude that homelessness was a growing problem. She talked to individuals, neighborhood centers, and even prostitutes.

Hopkinton – When a cat or dog is admitted to a shelter, he already has a lot going against him. The reason for him being surrendered could be for behavioral issues, the family may not be able to take care of him anymore, or he may be a stray. Entering a shelter where there are other cats and dogs also bewildered and stressed can make any animal even more distressed. Their chances of then presenting well and finding their forever home drop substantially.

Region – Although it is still not 100 percent certain how Hurricane Sandy will affect New England, local and government officials are not taking any chances as they set plans in place to deal with what many are calling "Frankenstorm." Last year's two storms – Hurricane Irene in August and the October nor'saster – left much of the state dealing with prolonged power outages, downed trees and wires. Governor Deval Patrick and his administration are doing their best, they said, to ensure that does not happen again this time.
