Region - Today is Thursday, April 12, the 103rd day of 2012. There are two significant anniversaries regarding traveling into space today. In 1961, Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Alekseyevich Gagarin became the first human being to travel into space as well as becoming the first to orbit the planet. Two decades later, the space shuttle Columbia became the first reusable manned spacecraft to travel into space. After taking off from Cape Canaveral, it traveled 54 hours before touching down at California's Edwards Air Force Base on April 14.

Region- Today is Wednesday, April 11, the 102nd day of 2012. On this day in 1970, Apollo 13, the third lunar landing mission, was launched from Cape Canaveral, FL. The mission quickly changed course abruptly two days later when an oxygen tank on board the spacecraft exploded. For several days mission control in Houston worked frantically to find a way to get the three astronauts on board home safely. That mission was accomplished when the three were able parachute to safety on April 17.

“Opera Prima Vera” to feature acclaimed soprano Maria Ferrante

Marlborough - The Friends of the Marlborough Public Library and the Paternoster Memorial Opera Trust will present "Opera Prima Vera" with Italian Serenades Wednesday evening, April 11, in the Bigelow Auditorium. The 7 p.m. concert will star internationally acclaimed soprano Maria Ferrante, tenor Ray Bauwens, and pianist Narine Badadjanian. The concert is open to the public and there is no admission charge.

Region -Today is Thursday, April 5. It is the 96th day of 2012. It was on this day in 1968 that legendary singer James Brown appeared at the Boston Garden. The concert almost did not happen because Boston, like many other U.S. cities, was amidst riots and turmoil after the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. just two days prior. But due to some savvy negotiating between Mayor Kevin White, Brown's team and a local television station, a decision was made to not only hold the concert, but also televise it. That decision was credited with helping to curb the violence in the city that night.

King, who many acknowledged as the country's most prominent civil-rights leader, was only 39 years old. On this day in 1933, a dirigible, the "Akron," crashed in New Jersey, plunging 73 people to their deaths. The accident was one of history's first air disasters.
