Northborough officials frustrated with issues of procurement, prevailing wage

March 29th, 2012

northboro

Northborough – The issues of procurement and prevailing wage continue to vex Northborough’s town officials. At the Board of Selectmen’s March 26 meeting, the board, along with Town Administrator John Coderre took the opportunity to discuss the matter with several legislators who attended the meeting.

Under state law, all municipal projects, no matter size and anticipated costs, are subject to these mandates. The regulations, which are meant to provide laborers with fair wages when working on municipal projects, often can drive up the cost of a project significantly. But many times, Coderre said, a business does not want to have to pay its employees a much higher wage for a municipal project when the pay for a similar type private project, that does not have to pay a prevailing wage, would be much lower. State regulations also require that extensive amounts of paperwork be completed by vendor and town officials, Coderre said.

WHS gymnast ‘balances’ teams, school

March 29th, 2012

WHS gymnast Kylie Jones

Westborough – Gymnastics can be one of the most deceptive sports. Athletes who are often tiny in stature tumble or perform amazing skills on apparatuses with what appears to be great ease. But behind every successful routine is an athlete who has worked hours at his or her craft to get to that level.

Kylie Jones, a 15-year-old Westborough High School (WHS) sophomore, is just such an athlete. Kylie is not only one of the top competitors for the Westborough-based Mass. Gymnastics Center (MGC) Prep. Op. Level 7 team, she also competes for WHS. During the winter season, Kylie consistently placed well, including a first place all-around finish at the Kids Celebrate Life Classic at Algonquin Regional High School Jan. 7.
